FIRST PRINCIPLES OF PRAYER
TO WHOM PRAYER IS ADDRESSED-OUR FATHER
(Matthew 6:6, 9; Luke 11:2)
Jesus teaches that the God to whom we
pray is present in this realm of the spirit.
“God is spirit: and they that worship
him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24; see also Acts
17:28). All that it means to call
God “Father, as He is in the Lord’s Prayer, can only be realized
in deliberate
and worshipful meditation. The word father”
has one important significance that
must not be overlooked: in prayer, as in all other activity, we relate as
children with a benevolent parent.
Prayer, as taught by Jesus, is the means by which every human want is
supplied, but this provision is incidental to personal communion with the
Father. His gifts are the precious
tokens of a Fatherly regard that is filled with love for His children.
