1 Chronicles 4:10
"Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
that
I may not cause pain!"
So,
God granted him what he requested.
A Biblical-Theological ReflectionsThe Prayer’s Second Petition – Enlarge My Territory
This part-two of the petition, gives the first sense
of characterization to the general plea for blessing. That God would enlarge
his territory… that he would prosper his endeavors for the increase of what
fell to his lot either by work or war. That God would enlarge our hearts, and
so enlarge our portion in himself and in the heavenly Canaan, ought to
be our desire and prayer.
Enlarge my territory
·
Jabez is asking
that God would give him more influence and opportunity to bring
glory to God. This is a specific goal. He is making a bold
request and asking God to give him big things. He may have also wanted to
enlarge his wisdom, understanding, humility, patience, and love and joy.
Perhaps he was even asking to have good health, to enlarge his physical
strength, and improve his character.
God wants his people to have large goals. He wants his peoples to reach and stretch, instead of shrinking or tolerating what they have.
Jabez is asking for God's help to take the
territory that had been allotted to him. Joshua tells us in chapter 13,
v20 that the land was divided among the tribes, with each tribe to divide up
the land among the families of the tribe, and these then are given the responsible
to drive out the inhabitants from the land.
